The Teutonic Castle in Malbork is one of the most famous attractions in Poland. His story is very long. It began to be built in the 13th century and the construction was completed in the 15th century. It was once the seat of the Teutonic Order. Currently, the castle is on the UNESCO list. The building can be divided into several parts. In the High Castle we can find a church, a chapel, a courtyard or a tower. In the Middle Castle, the most famous places are: the Palace of the Grand Masters, the Kurza Noga tower and the Great Commandery. However, in the Low Castle: Karwan and the chapel are waiting for you. The castle is an excellent example of Gothic architecture. It is built of thick walls and has small, arched windows. For seven centuries, the Malbork Castle has stood on the hill above the Nogat - a monument to the craftsmanship of medieval builders. The monumental gothic building still amazes and impresses with the rawness of the shapes, the coolness of the castle halls, the mystery of passages, the depth of the moats and the extent of the thick defensive walls. Seven centuries of turbulent history conceals a castle. In the second half of the thirteenth century, the brothers of the knightly order, called the Teutonic Knights, chose the hill above Nogat as the new seat of their order. Initially, a castle was built to house the convent (High Castle). The emerging building became a religious house and fortress, and from the fourteenth century the capital of the Teutonic Order. Then, the construction of a new representative castle (Medium Castle) began, which included the palace of the great masters, a great refectory, guest rooms and reception rooms. The Przedzamcze was extended and erected, where the outbuildings of Karwan, bell house, etc. were found. The castle complex with an area of about 20 hectares fastens huge walls, surrounds the moats, and large gates, towers and towers defend access to the fortress. The Malbork Castle was dazzling with splendor, amazed with the richness of architectural solutions, and exerted its magnitude. In 1457, during the Thirteen Years' War, the castle was taken over by King Kazimierz Jagiellończyk. For over three centuries, the castle performed important economic and political functions, was an arsenal of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the residence of Polish rulers and the seat of Malbork starosts, here also the royal mint was active. During the Polish-Swedish wars the castle performed a military function, but the presence of troops adversely affected the building. At the end of the 19th century, reconstruction and reconstruction of the castle began - this work was carried out by the young and talented Konrad Steinbrecht. The Malbork Castle is a masterpiece of defensive and residential architecture of the late Middle Ages. The largest Gothic castle complex in the world with an area of approx. 21 hectares and a total volume of buildings exceeding a quarter of a million cubic meters. It is considered the largest brick building erected by human hands Since 1961. the castle is hosted by the Malbork Castle Museum. The facility exhibits 18 permanent exhibitions for tourists, including rich collections of amber, military items and gothic sculptures and several temporary exhibitions. Over half a million tourists from all over the world visit them every year.
