The beginnings of the castle date back to the 13th century. Then the first defensive structure was built on the Rega River. Initially, the stronghold was surrounded by a moat and defensive walls over 12 meters high. It was built by the rulers of Brandenburg. At the end of the fourteenth century, the castle was purchased by the Teutonic Order, which made a significant reconstruction, including they added a high tower that allowed a view of the entire area, the chapel and the refectory. In 1540, the castle passed into the hands of the Knights of St. John, hence the stronghold is called the Castle of St. John. They rebuilt the castle in the Baroque style. In the second half of the 18th century, the moat was filled in and the last changes that have survived to this day have been made. Currently, it houses the Świdwin Culture Center, the Municipal Public Library and the Tourist Information Center. The castle has a souvenir shop, disco, cinema, entertainment hall and a conference room for 80 people. The oldest - north wing of the castle is open to visitors, in which there are: Exhibition Salon, Knight's Hall and Audience Hall.
