A historic road bridge built in 1851-1857, which is a masterpiece of engineering art and one of the impressive bridges of Tczew. Currently, its construction consists of 12 spans with five different types of construction. In 2004, the American Association of Civil Engineers recognized him as an international monument of construction engineering. This is the first facility in Central and Eastern Europe honored with this title. The first train passed it on October 12, 1857. The 837 m long bridge, supported by seven pillars, was the longest in Europe and one of the largest in the world. The portals (gates) of the bridge until 1920 were decorated with reliefs depicting the opening of the bridge by Frederick William IV (from the side of Tczew) and the Teutonic Knights conquering Lithuania (Winrich von Kniprode, receiving homage from the Lithuanian prince Kiejstut). In the years 1888-1891, a second bridge was built, only 30 meters away. Then the older of the bridges was replaced by a road one. Originally, both bridges were shorter than today, because then the protective embankment was closer to the riverbed. In 1912, the embankment was moved towards Lisewo, the bridges were extended and annexes with a common gate were built. In both bridges there are all possible technical and constructional solutions used in the construction art of bridges since the 19th century.
